Title: Bangla Translator / Copy Writer (1 Year Fixed Term) BBC World Service Trust- Dhaka No. of Vacancies : 1 Job Level : Entry Level Job Type : Contract Job Description Duty Station: Dhaka Reports to: Interactive Bangla Editor Duration: 1 year fixed term (possible extension) Grade: 2 The BBC World Service Trust is the BBC’s international development agency. Working in over 40 countries worldwide, the Trust uses media and communications to reduce poverty and promote human rights. In Bangladesh, the Trust is supporting and expanding programming in its key areas of focus. This has included a governance initiative in partnership with the BBC Bengali Service entitled Sanglap (weekly debates on television and radio). It has also launched a major project under English in Action designed to use the media to improve the English language skills of adults in Bangladesh. Core activities include factual and drama television programs, mobile and online learning products and content for radio. The BBC World Service Trust is now seeking a Bangla Translator / Copy Writer to assist in managing its significant operations and in communicating effectively in Bangla with its target audience in Bangladesh. Based in our modern offices in Dhaka, this is an opportunity to work on an interesting range of Bangla copy across different media platforms. Working to the Interactive Bangla Editor and as part of the BBC World Service Trust’s interactive content team, the Bangla Translator / Copy Writer will be required to: understand the target audience for the BBC World Service Trust's services and to produce Bangla copy to meet its needs translate English copy into Bangla for a variety of services, in line with an agreed
brief and style guide, including
English lessons and marketing materials delivered via web, mobile, email, CD ROM and print. write and edit Bangla copy in line with an agreed brief and style guide for a variety of services, including English lessons and marketing materials delivered via web, mobile, email, CD ROM and print review and edit Bangla translation work carried out by content providers in Dhaka translate, write and edit web pages across the BBC Janala websites write and edit the Bangla- language elements of the BBC Janala email newsletter and other email products review Bangla-language web pages already created and refer potential changes to the Interactive Bangla Editor and senior producers write and edit Bangla copy written by or for the BBC World Service Trust ’s different teams for relevant materials according to an agreed editorial schedule write original Bangla copy for use on third party websites, including social networking sites such as Facebook write original Bangla copy for the BBC World Service Trust's use in third party publications work to set production schedules in order to meet deadlines for publication Educational Qualification Education up to Honor ’s level in mass communication,
language or education Job Requirement Requirements: Significant experience of translating, writing and editing Bangla copy for publication online or in print Education up to Honor’s level in mass communication, language or education Experience of working with translators and of translation from English to Bangla Experience of updating a website, ideally using a Content Management System, is desirable An understanding of media and, in particular, new media and how to exploit it to the benefit of the BBC World Service Trust is desirable Experience of working in international organisations as a translator, copy writer or editor or as part of the product development team is desirable Competencies: Good interpersonal skills and, in particular, the ability to work as part of a team and to establish effective working relationships Excellent spoken and written communication skills in both English and Bangla Ability to work in a fast paced environment Ability to manage a busy workload effectively and high degree of flexibility in adapting to frequently shifting priorities and deadlines Attention to detail Salary : Negotiable Other Benefits : N/A Work Experience Experience of working with
